Tai Chi Chuan for Martial Arts, Health and Well Being

What is Tai Chi Chuan?

Tai Chi Chuan was first developed as a martial art created by the Taoist Monk Chang San-Feng on
the basis of profound self-realization, imbued with Taoist philosophy, and techniques of internal
alchemy. Tai Chi Chuan is a highly effective method of meditation, health exercise, and martial art.
Tai Chi Chuan is actually a fairly new name; the art was first called by two names Hao Chuan "loose
fighting" or Tien Hsueh "death touch". Tai Chi Chuan was considered an internal art to separate
themselves from the Shaolin martial arts which focus on developing strength and hardening the
body, while Tai Chi Chuan focused on the energy within and training the mind.

Why Tai Chi Chuan?

People are drawn to Tai Chi Chuan for a variety of reasons. The first and most common is Health!
Tai Chi Chuan's slow and flowing movements help to stretch the body and align the skeletal
structure while moving energy throughout the body. This energy can be called Qi and we all have it.
Life style, mental health, along with physical health all play a role in how strong our energies are.
The energy can be blocked by poor lifestyle habits, I.E. smoking, drinking, and lack of sleep.
Stimulation through Tai Chi Chuan practice removes blockages of the Qi in part by diffusing lactic
acid and carbon monoxide accumulations in the muscle tissue.

These blockages cause stagnated blood and a rigid inflexible body. Stiffness creates overwhelming
pressure on the muscles, nerves, blood, lymphatic, and synovial fluids. In turn, the functioning of the
skeletal system and internal organs are also detrimentally affected. The flow of Qi in the body
becomes obstructed as a result of physical (trauma/injury) or internal (emotional stress)
disturbances, dramatic changes, or imbalances in diet and lifestyle. If the circulation of Qi becomes
stagnant, illness will soon arise. When the pathways within the body are open free from obstruction,
the chi may flow freely and the body's chi will be balanced. Then true health can be enjoyed along
with increased vitality and new found joy for life!
